Breast nipple reconstruction surgery is a process of rebuilding the nipple on the top of the breast. It can be the final job in the breast reconstruction procedure after cancer treatment. For the surgery, skin for the new nipple to be formed is usually taken from the thigh, buttocks, breast mound, or stomach. The shape, color, and size of the new nipple can be made exactly similar to the original one and so it is important for a patient to be in touch with the surgeon who performs the operation.

There are various types of nipple reconstruction procedures and a person’s preference and physical condition are taken into account before selecting a suitable one. The different types of reconstruction methods are as follows.

1. Skin flap reconstruction – in this method, small flaps of skin are taken from near the area where the new nipple is to be located. The flaps are folded and sewn over the level of the skin so that there is a bump that will be the new nipple. There have been doubts cast on this technique as the nipple can flatten or retract over time and hence other methods can be chosen.
2. Skin graft reconstruction – The areola is created in this process by taking skin from the buttocks, thigh, or stomach whereas the nipple is made from the skin in the breast. Some studies have indicated it as the best technique as the color and texture can match perfectly.
3. Medical tattooing – A medical tattoo can resemble a pigmented areola on the top of a reconstructed nipple. There has been a lot of development in the medical tattoo so that a lot of options can be available.
   However, the fact remains that nipple reconstruction can be done with sufficient ease and to a patient’s preference.
