Sialography

What is Sialography

Sialography is a specialized radiographic technique used to evaluate the salivary glands and their ductal systems. It is highly effective in diagnosing conditions such as salivary stones, chronic sialadenitis, ductal strictures, and glandular obstructions. At Elegance Superspeciality Dental Clinic in Surat, we offer advanced sialography services to help detect and treat salivary gland issues with precision.

What Is Sialography?

Sialography is a minimally invasive imaging procedure where a contrast dye is injected into the salivary duct (usually of the parotid or submandibular glands), followed by X-rays or CT scans to visualize the structure and function of the gland.

When Is Sialography Recommended?

Sialography is typically advised for patients experiencing:

  • Chronic swelling or pain in the salivary glands
  • Recurrent gland infections
  • Suspected salivary stones (sialoliths)
  • Blockage or narrowing of salivary ducts
  • Unclear imaging results from other diagnostic methods

It helps locate the exact site of obstruction or abnormality, allowing for accurate treatment planning.

Benefits of Sialography

  • Non-surgical and quick procedure
  • Accurately detects stone position and ductal anomalies
  • Helps prevent unnecessary surgeries
  • Facilitates targeted treatment of glandular conditions
  • Can be combined with therapeutic procedures like sialendoscopy

Risk Factors Involved

While Sialography is a safe diagnostic tool, some rare risks may include:

  • Mild pain or discomfort during dye injection
  • Temporary swelling or sensitivity at the duct site
  • Allergic reaction to the contrast dye (very rare)
  • Infection or inflammation of the duct
  • Difficulty flushing the contrast material in rare cases

What Happens Before the Procedure

  • Consultation & Evaluation – Includes physical exam and review of symptoms
  • Imaging Review – Ultrasound or plain X-rays may be done initially
  • Pre-procedure Instructions – Patients are advised to stay well-hydrated
  • Allergy Check – Especially for contrast dye reactions

What Happens During the Procedure

  • Local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort
  • A small cannula is gently inserted into the gland duct
  • Contrast dye is slowly injected
  • Radiographic images are taken in quick succession to map out the ducts
  • Once complete, the duct may be flushed and massaged to stimulate saliva flow

The entire process usually takes 20–30 minutes.

What Happens After the Procedure

  • Patients are monitored briefly and then discharged
  • Temporary swelling, metallic taste, or mild soreness may occur
  • Most people resume normal activity within a few hours
  • Rarely, antibiotics may be prescribed if there’s pre-existing infection

Recovery Time

  • Recovery is usually immediate to 1 day
  • Any mild symptoms resolve within 24–48 hours
  • Patients can return to work or normal activities the same day unless otherwise advised

Post-Operative Care

  • Stay hydrated to encourage saliva flow
  • Warm compresses and gentle massage may help relieve minor swelling
  • Good oral hygiene helps prevent secondary infections
  • Avoid very spicy or acidic foods for the first 24 hours
  • Report any signs of allergy, persistent swelling, or pain to your doctor

When to Consult a Doctor

You should consult a specialist if you experience:

  • Persistent or recurrent swelling near the jaw or under the tongue
  • Pain while eating or speaking
  • Dry mouth or difficulty in saliva flow
  • Frequent salivary gland infections
  • Previous imaging that failed to identify a clear cause of symptoms

FAQs

The procedure may cause mild discomfort, but it’s generally well-tolerated. Local anesthesia is sometimes used.

A sialography typically takes 20–30 minutes, including preparation and imaging.

Risks are minimal but may include temporary swelling, allergic reaction to contrast dye, or infection. These are rare and manageable.

While sialography can suggest a space-occupying lesion, MRI or CT scans are often used to confirm tumors.
